I don’t Know Much About Soccer

I don’t know much about soccer. I find it boring. I want to see more goals, more activity, and more action. Your team possessed the ball more, good for you. Score. Give me a shot clock, a play clock, something to drive the action. How much fun would soccer be with a shot clock? While I am not the biggest fan of the game, it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate people being the best at their craft and mastering their skills.

I enjoy the show, the atmosphere, and the importance of the event. I will be watching and of course wagering tomorrow on the Women’s World Cup. Soccer is one thing, but this is about national pride. America has the best Men’s basketball, baseball, and football players in the world. Soccer, not so much. However, when it comes to the women’s game, we are the best.

I am headed to a watch party tomorrow and am very excited about it. I have watched every game team USA has played at this point. I may have wagered on them too, but that was the past. Tomorrow, America becomes the best women’s team in the world. I will get to watch it with some family and friends. What more can I ask for on a Sunday morning? Besides the NFL of course.

My Wagers
Parlay One
Washington Nationals ML (Winner)
Pirates/Brewers Over (Winner)
USA to win in Regular Time
+230 (2 Units)

Over 2.5 Goals (2 Units)
-125

Parlay Two
Over 2.5 Goals
USA to Win in Regular Time
+110

When it comes down to it, while I believe America is going to win, I can’t lay the -500 at the moment. I can find another wager I like to pair it with tomorrow I shall and parlay them to bring the odds down. This is soccer and fluky things happen. One penalty in the box and all the sudden it’s 1-0 Netherlands. That’s not going to happen though. So tomorrow at 11 AM, I will be eating brunch, drinking a beer and cheering for the old USA. Join me!

Three Bets to Win the 2019-2020 #NBA Title

I have been coming kind of close to actually winning a GPP on Draft Kings. I have several top 25 finishes the last few days, but can’t quite get over the top. Last night was extremely bizarre as one of the chalky pitchers was rained out, rather quickly. The White Sox barely waited an hour to call the game. Meanwhile the Pirates waited over two hours during a rain delay before returning to play. The White Sox were definitely being weird in this situation, but at least they aren’t the Nationals.

Some how I was able to cash despite my skill in picking pitchers. 2.05. That is all I got out of both pitching spots and my lineup still cashed in everything. Below is a picture of the $20 3-Entry Max lineup. Of course, the Astros stack helped a ton.

IMG_5309.PNG

I hit all my wagers on the World Cup yesterday and also need to mention some bets I talked about on Twitter. During and prior to free agency in the NBA I made two wagers of teams to win the title. I have Boston at 24/1 and New Orleans at 80/1. My thinking was that Al Horford would sign with one of them. Oops. I can always hedge my way out of them in the playoffs next April or May. In terms of value, both are now listed at shorter odds. (Boston is 22/1 and NO is 70/1) The other wager I am making is on the Pacers. They improved dramatically the last two weeks and will have Dipo back as well. I now also have the Pacers at 70/1.

I will be posting my plays for DFS and my wagers tonight on Twitter. If you are playing DFS tonight you need to have a Colorado and a Houston stack. The trick is going to be what cheap pitchers you can place around those stacks. I want to punt both pitching spots some how though.

Good luck everyone!

NBA Power Rankings!

This is as of 11:04 pm. Kawhi is a free agent. Deangelo Russell has yet to pick a destination. I think those two are obviously related. The twitter sphere has posted some cryptic tweets by Richard Jefferson mentioning the lakers. I assume that means kawhi.

Until that at this moment. Here is my power rankings for each conference. Also, the Knicks are the worst team by far.

Competing is Hard to Give Up

As we get older many former athletes miss competition. I am the same way. I think part of the reason I am drawn to fantasy sports and daily fantasy is the competition aspect of it all. I like to win. I like to compete. I also like winning money.

Yesterday I was playing for my neighborhood’s softball team. It’s competitive. There are playoffs and teams come from the county. I honestly, have not swung a bat in at least ten years. I have thrown a few times, with my son, or my father. I have also tossed a few games of t-ball for my son’s team. I like to think I was well rested.

I was excited to play. Baseball was my best sport in high school. I wasn’t all conference, but I started a few years in high school, mostly at third base. I caught occasionally, usually when my friend Drew would pitch. It was a blast. If we ever got very far behind or ahead they would let me pitch to eat up innings. I had a decent knuckleball I would try to throw. Sometimes it would hit people, or get hit out of the stadium. I think I had more fun playing baseball in high school than the other sports I played. (Basketball and football) This was despite the fact our baseball team was normally hovering at .500. The other two sports were much more successful. My state runner-up medal for basketball is somewhere in my basement.

First two games yesterday I was rusty. Dropped a few balls and missed plays I would have made 20 years ago. Just getting used to being back on the field is not easy. I didn’t strike out, but hit some weak balls into play. I’ll get better for the nest time, I thought. Then the third game started.

First two batters get on. I’m playing third. Ball hit between third and short. I make the ball and proceed to race the runner to third. I won. He was out. Yet, so was I. I rolled my ankle horribly when I hit the bag. I heard a pop. I assumed it was a bone. I knew it wasn’t my Achilles. I partially tore that three years ago playing volleyball. I walked off the field and headed to the bench. I started to get light headed and dizzy. I thought I was in shock from breaking my leg. A friend, Frank, helped me get home.

Thankfully, we have an emergency orthopedic injury clinic near us. X-rays were negative. I didn’t dislocate it either.

I did tear ligaments.

I’ll be in a boot and on crutches for the next four weeks.

IMG_5147

Am I going to quit? No way. I’m going to get in better shape and be ready to play again. I have to. I need to. I also want to be able to play sports with my kids. I need the competition. I also need to start wearing ankle braces. I’ll be back.

Wagers for tonight have already been posted on Twitter!

Betting the Over in Pittsburgh Pirates Games

I realize I need to update some records, especially now that the NBA season has concluded. I did hit my Raptors +240 to win the series and Raptors in game six wager. I was able to make a small profit during the season and playoffs on straight bets, but on parlays/teasers/future wagers we made a big profit. I was able to hit some parlays and some series wagers that allowed me to be in the green as we head to the slow gambling season.

I was thinking I would take it easy on baseball, then my Pittsburgh Pirates had every pitcher get hurt and their offense picked up. The over has gone 12-5 since June 1st in games the Pirates have played. Their pitching staff and bullpen is hurt and has been dreadful. The offense is shockingly adequate. I wish I noticed this trend before. I was down a little in baseball, but have now made a nice comeback thanks to the Pirates totals. I even hit a nice little four team parlay last night in baseball. I am sure I will be back at it again…today.

Until the situation changes or there totals get too high, I am betting the over in Pirates games every night. What great analysis. The next step is to actually pick a golf winner. Thanks Tyrell Hatton for finishing 21st and just missing my top 20 wager. After today I will remove my NBA records from below and only list golf, baseball and perhaps maybe some soccer. Everyone is cheering for Team USA! Enjoy the slow period.

Stranger Things: The Nick Nurse Timeout

That was weird. I said it in my last blog that this has been the weirdest playoffs I can recall. Game five was even stranger. The KD injury. The Kawhai takeover. The Nick Nurse timeout. The Splash Brothers hitting those threes. The Dray turnover. The Boogie bungles. Most of that occurred in the final five minutes of the game. All amazing, memorable and very strange. The Warriors last three possessions, offensive goal tending, over, and back turnover, offensive foul. They won.

IMG_4779
What do we say to the God of Death?

To say the Warriors comeback cost me money would be correct. The good news is we get to bet the Raptors in game six. I will be taking them. I had the Raptors are different spreads last night, -1, Pick, +1. I had live bet the Raptors at +150 and +250 during the game. Everything was in place, up six with three minutes left and had the ball. The Warriors were reeling and it felt like about to crumble. Time out Raptors.

WAIT WHAT?!

The Crowd was on fire, the Warriors looked done, Kawhai was killing them and Nick Nurse called timeout. Running 24 seconds off and throwing the ball at the rim would have been better. The crowd got quiet and the Raptors got tight. You already know what happened next. No analytics in the world can quantify the momentum and energy of that moment. Nurse should have let it all play out and trust his veteran team as he had done the entire playoffs. If the Raptors lose this series somehow that will be the moment of what if we all look back on. Nevertheless, for now, on to game six.

The next golf major start this week and I threw down some small wagers on people who I hope can hit it big. As long as one of these three makes the top 20, I do not lose much at all. I am betting three people to make the top 20 and win outright. I have listed their top 20 odds below too!
Rory Sabbatini 150/1
Tyrell Hatton 90/1

Can the Warriors Limp to the Title?

Describing the NBA playoffs this year has been difficult. I keep finding myself saying; oh it was a weird game. I think I’ve said that phrase too many times. We had the Durant got hurt game. The you forgot about us original Warrior’s game. The no one can make a shot and Giannis is screwed game. The Kwhai four rim touch series winner. Everything Portland did before being swept. Nothing has been straightforward and while a lot of it makes sense, many of the results have been random.

All of that leads us to where we are in game three now. Bill Simmons on his podcast said anything could happen the next five games. He is completely correct. I bet against the Warriors when they played the Rockets. I bet against them in this series too. My prevailing opinion was that Kerr was out of moves and players he could conceivably trust and use in big moments. My assessment was 100% correct, but does it matter? Houston was unable to make enough shots to take down the Warriors. Can Toronto?

Looney is out. KD is out. Klay is not healthy. Quinn Cook is going to have to play 20 minutes. Andrew Bogut or someone else is going to have to play minutes too. Toronto played a box and one on the Warriors, the freaking Warriors of all teams and it worked. Yet, they could not make enough shots down the stretch themselves. The Warriors are limping to the finish line. To make things even more interesting, game four is Friday, leaving no rest for the Warriors. Simply, game three is a must win for Toronto. Boogie is only going to get more comfortable. Klay is going to heal up some and oh yeah Kevin Durant may be back for game four. If the Raptors have, any shot of winning a title winning in Golden State tonight is a big step.

The line for this game has moved all around. It has been as high as Golden State -6 and as low as Golden State -4.5. At first, it appeared the public was on Toronto and the professionals were on the Warriors, but now that has flipped. The money is closer to even as are the tickets. (Slight Toronto edge in both, but not dramatic)

I am biased I suppose. I have been calling for the end of the Warriors since the playoffs started. I called this series the 2004 Lakers/Pistons all over again. When things end for dynasties, they tend to end abruptly and unexpectedly. It felt like after game one we were headed down that path. Toronto should have taken control of game two but let it slip. That has been the Warriors biggest edge the last few years. When they have been vulnerable, no one has really taken advantage.

All the historical data says that Golden State should be a great bet tonight. Coming home tied in the series against a road team that struggles to score, especially on the road. Conversely, the Warriors always play better at home. (This year they had some real weird home losses though) I just do not think the Warriors are healthy enough. If Klay cannot give it a go and be close to normal the Warriors will not have enough offense. We will get a report in the next few hours revealing how healthy Klay is or is not. I am waiting, but leaning Toronto +5. I hope that we get the Klay news before online gambling comes to iPhone’s!

Saying Good Bye to Game of Thrones #GOT

It is impossible to end a massively detailed and nuanced story in any way that will satisfy everyone. It cannot be done. This is especially true when the story in question has as much history and source material as Game of Thrones does. It is very clear that the story and show itself changed dramatically when they were out of source material. After Jon died at the end of season five, the show shifts in many ways. The nuance, the detail, the travel. Everything speeds up dramatically. The show did not get worse, or become bad, it just sacrificed a lot of what made it so exceptional to head to a specific end game. Was this the result of not having books as a guide? Was this because they had an outline of how to end the show? Was this just a result of fatigue, running a massive tent pole show for HBO that films all over the world? In the end all of them contributed to the final three season and the rushed feeling many fans described.

IMG_4389

Last night’s finale was the epitome of the final three season. It was fine. It was not amazing. It was not terrible. There were some amazing highs and some baffling lows. In many ways, last night’s finale ended the moment Jon killed Dany. That was effectively the end of the story. The rest was just an epilogue. It almost felt like everything after Dany dies was the writers saying how can we close all threads we left in a faster semi-satisfactory way. The destination for all the characters made complete sense, but the speed and path seemed a little off, much like this entire season. To be fair I never expected this season to blow me away or surpass expectations. I was ready to enjoy the spectacle and the amazing moments we were going to get along the way as opposed to worrying about the totality of the ending. There were moments in this season that did exceed my expectations and blew me away. I will ride for episodes three and five forever.

The book readers seem unhappy. They wanted the show to dive deeper into the prophecies, the theories and the magic. The show used those as plot devices, but none of them really matter, as much to the show as it did to the books or the book readers. The prince who was promised, light bringer, Valonqar prophecies were all fun to debate and speculate about. In the end, they did not matter. This is driving many people crazy. They wanted more, they wanted nuance, and they wanted a reason for some of what was happening to come back to their theories. The show was never completely about that and in reality killed magic off with the death of the Night King. One could argue that Bran warged into the white horse that saves Arya, or maybe Bran warged into Drogon and had him scoop up Dany and fly away. Those are two of the unanswerable questions. Couple those along with the thought that maybe Bran had this planned all along. Maybe he knew the future and was actually trying to make sure this happened. After all, he did not come all this way for nothing.

The biggest criticism I saw come out last night after the finale dealt with Jon’s parentage. People were saying it ended up being a massive reveal that did not affect the story. That is lunacy.

If Jon is not a Targaryen:
Dany does not feel that he is a threat.
Dany does not have to worry about him telling others.
Dany does not feel betrayed by Jon.
Dany does not feel betrayed by Sansa and Tyrion.
Tyrion does not tell Varys.
Varys does not try to poison her.
Dany does not burn Varys.
No one suggests Jon be King due to birth.
Jon can not ride a dragon.
Jon does not reject Dany.
Dany is not Jon’s Aunt.
Jon and Dany are together.
Dany rules with love and not fear.
Dany does not burn the city.
Jon cannot walk past Drogon and kill Dany.

If Jon is just Jon Snow, all of those plot points are drastically different and so is the show as a whole.

The ending worked just fine for me, as it was essentially, what I had been speculating for weeks. It was apparent Dany was going to die and Jon would not be the king. I speculated Sansa would rule with Tyrion as co-rulers. In a way, that is exactly what we have. Bran is off looking for Drogon and allowing Tyrion and the small council to run the country. Meanwhile Sansa is a queen and running her own nation in the north. I speculated that Jon would go north and join the night’s watch, which ended up happening. I would have rather had Jon abdicate his claim and decide to go north. That would have made more sense, but this worked too.

IMG_4386

I do not know why after Grey Worm left Jon did not just stay. Who would have objected? I guess Jon really did not have a place there anymore and the north was in him. The ending felt right for all of the characters. This was probably the closest to a happy ending the show was going to give the viewers. I liked it. I honestly, do not know how else they could have ended it that made sense. Sansa being Queen I suppose would have worked. I mean where did Drogon go? Was he so upset that the pursuit of the throne made his mother die? Did he have to destroy it? Or was that Bran destroying it? Will we get answers on Drogon in a spin off, or is Bran handling it?

IMG_4387

Everything that happened on the show and this final season was foreshadowed the entire time.  Dany was always going to be the final dragon that needed to be slain. Everyone’s character arc and especially Dany’s turn was always right in front of our faces. Unfortunately, it happened too quickly the final two seasons. Could that have been fixed, maybe? It does not matter now. It was fine. Like all shows, I enjoyed the journey much more than the destination.

Looking back on the entire journey I will remember the shocking moments, the awesome battle sequences and the fun I had discussing the show with friends and family. To me the discussions and excitement played into why the show mattered so much to me.  Coming to work every Monday ready to discuss with co-workers. Texting with friends as soon as major events happened. Reading articles, following the conversation on twitter and of course watching Talk the Thrones and listening to podcasts were what made this experience so fantastic. I will almost miss the discussions and media about the show more than the show itself. It’s all over now, but it was a great ride.

Predictions for #GOT Finale

We made it. This is it. Sunday will be the final episode of Game of Thrones. I realize that the last few episodes have been divisive to say the least. I cannot recall a show that was this popular, but people hated the final stretch so much. This is not everybody, but the internet has strong takes. While this season definitely feels rushed, everything else seems to be wrapping up and heading toward a conclusion we should have seen coming in some ways.

The biggest complaints I have read over the last week really deal with three major topics. I am going to try to explain why I feel those complaints are not actually valid.

Jaime’s character arc made zero sense
I do not understand what is so difficult here. Jaime countless times has been drawn back to Cersai, always to his detriment. Jaime even says in season six that he would launch a baby over a wall and kill anyone to get back to her. Yes, Jaime tried to go straight and live an honorable life. That was never who he was. Like a criminal getting out of jail, Jaime tried to go straight. He honored his word, he fought for the living and he met someone he felt comfortable being around and loved. We have seen characters in stories do this before. They strive to change and get redemption, but ultimately, people are who they are. Jaime spent the night with Brienne and did everything the “right way.” It did not feel right to him. The criminal who has been trying to do the right thing for his family always gets sucked back in for one more job, or one final event. In this case, it had tragic consequences. Jaime knew that. However, he has always been drawn to the person he shared and was born into the world with. The story was always ending with Jaime going back to Cersai, people just wish he would have made a better choice. A character arc does not always means change for the good. Jaime’s arc led him right back to where he started.

Cersai should have been killed by someone we know
A main character did kill her! Dany Killed her. In what became an odd situation the Lannister army actually became the sympathetic figure in all this. They were trying to protect the people of Kings Landing despite them already surrendering. In many ways, Cersai should have been executed after the city was over taken when they rang the bells. Dany had other plans. Cersai at this point would have done anything to hold onto the city, even as it literally crumbled around her. This was a metaphor for entire family and way of life. No matter the situation, she never gave up. I think it was poetic that she died and was crushed by the building she fought so hard to keep. The book readers are mad that their prophecy was not fulfilled, but in a weird way was it? If she weren’t pregnant would she have surrendered earlier? Who knows? Jaime and Cersai going out of the world the same way they went in was poetic and sad. Together, they accomplished a lot. Honestly, they killed far less people than Dany did before she ever got to Kings Landing. The biggest thing to me was, if anyone had killed her they would have had to die as well. I am happy Arya did not die. (Some internet theories are not sure)

Dany turned heel far too quickly
This has been hinted at and mentioned so many times. We even had one of Bran’s and Dany’s visions from the temple of the undying that showed a throne room with ash flying through the air. We all thought it was snow, but it was not. Dany has killed people every single place she has gone. BUT THEY WERE ALL BAD GUYS AGAINST HER. That is exactly how she viewed the people of Kings Landing!

IMG_4301

Dany was not getting the credit of the adulation of Jon. Dany had lost more than Jon. Dany saved the lives of the living. Dany losing everyone close to her, another dragon and then having Varys try to poison her was the last straw. Dany worked her entire life for the moment when she would take back what was hers. The problem is she was the only one that thought it was hers. When the bells rang, the victory felt hollow. Athletes and coaches talk about winning the championship feeling hollow, but the journey was actually the experience.

IMG_4298

Add the entire thing up and it makes complete sense. A person with unlimited power who has been told her methods are too violent at every step, now has no one or person to be accountable to. This was always the path. Just because you liked her or rooted for her to get vengeance doesn’t mean she was a good person and not capable of evil. Dany has literally burned someone in every single season. EVERY SEASON.

IMG_4306

Dany’s brother said in season one, you can rule with either fear or love. This last episode had Dany beg Jon for love. Jon rejected her. Dany even says, so it will be fear then. There was many clues along the way that this was inevitable. Then there are lines that are so obvious, people chose to ignore them.

IMG_4277

SHE TOLD YOU WHAT SHE WAS GOING TO DO! Why don’t people accept it? This just completely baffles me. Dany’s mercy has always been to kill people who she deemed as bad and to rule her way. That’s not mercy. That is a different type of governing.

IMG_4300

Dany has not been universally loved and looked at glowingly since she arrived in Meereen. That was season five! That was many years ago. Everything has gone downhill since then for Dany and it culminated in her not feeling satisfied with her victory. The win wasn’t good enough. She wanted everyone to know that she won and this was her time. There was only one way to do that.

IMG_4299

How do they wrap this show up in only 80 minutes Sunday? It’s prediction time! You can find my other predictions before episodes here and here. What I said is still in play, but now is more clear. I think we have two possible option for how this all plays out. Yes, I am going to include gambling odds, which you may view as a spoiler. You have been warned, but the gambling odds have been wrong most of this season.

IMG_4302

Jon is going to kill Dany. I had speculated that Dany was going to die at some point, now it is clear she will. Dany’s army will not be happy about this at all. Grey Worm will try to take out Jon and whatever forces he has left. Seemingly, they will be in bad shape as Drogon will be upset too. Bran will warg into Drogon and eliminate Dany’s army. I can’t come up with any other way in which they handle her army. There is no one left. No one would be willing to fight a person with a dragon. It has to go this way.

Once Dany is one and her army is take out, two possible solutions exist. I don’t believe Jon wants to be King and believe he will abdicate his throne. I have been saying this for weeks. He has even given up everything he has ever been named.

IMG_4347

This of course would lead to the union I believe will rule in Sansa and Tyrion ruling together. This is the most logical conclusion left and frankly, we don’t have enough characters left we actually know. Jon then goes north, pets his dog and lives out his days as commander of the new night’s watch. The other possible ending seems a little weirder.

IMG_4304

Did information leak? Why is Bran Stark the betting favorite to sit on the Iron Throne? How can this even happen? My theory is just like above Jon kills Dany, Jon abdicates, but Sansa says I don’t want to live down there. Winterfell is my home. Bran ends up ruling, but decides the best way for peace is to divide the kingdom into the seven nations it once was. We just have enough characters to rule in every place.
Sansa The North
Dornish Prince Dorne
Bronn High Garden
Davos Dragon Stone
Robin of Arryn The Eyrie
Yara Iron Islands
Tyrion Casterly Rock
Gendry Storms End
That would just leave Riverrun as a place some one needs to rule. Maybe Brienne?

To me these seem like the two most likely options. How will this all play out? I can not wait to find out. What do you think?

Who Will Win the #PGA Championship: My DFS Plays and Wagers

Sometime things go well. Sometimes things seem too easy. Normally, that’s when it is about to turn bad. I hit my huge baseball/basketball parlay last weekend at +2149. A really nice jolt to the bank roll. I hit another small parlay last night that seemed almost too easy. The Astros and Warriors money parlay paid almost +100. Neither were every really in doubt. At this point I will end up money on basketball parlays and teasers for the season.

In terms of this upcoming weekend we have the next PGA major to wager on and make lineups for! I am betting two different longer shot golfers to win the second major. One has played very well here in Bubba Watson. Watson is currently 75/1 aka +7500. A $10 bet would make $750. I have not locked this wager in yet, but my other selection I have.

Lucas Glover has great course history at Beth Page Black. Based upon that and nothing else, I threw $10 on him at 150/1, or +15000. My small $10 bet would make $1500.

IMG_4308

In terms of the Draft Kings Milly Maker Lineup I have narrowed my player pool to the following people:
Cantlay
Bryson
Brooks
Glover
Fowler
Rory
Xander
Sergio
Woodland
Suri
List
Rahm
Mitchell
Bubba

Just like the Masters I am fading Tiger in every way. I might look dumb again, you never know. Once the PGA Championships tomorrow I’ll post my lineups.

I do have one small wager for you for tonight. I am riding the Astros until they actually lose a game. Tonight they have Justin Verlander and continue to kill the ball. I am not crazy about them being a -300 favorite, but I found a way around that.
